Grief and Guilt

Grief and guilt
have different timetables
and one is no friend to you.

You will come out
from under this
one day and I know
that you fear that
most of all.

I know because
I have had that moment.
I know because
it’s coming for me again.

It doesn’t help, of course,
to know that you are just one.
That every single person
on this silly little planet
has felt or will feel the
way that you do someday.

And that’s ok.

This grief is yours
and so is this guilt.

No one can take
either from you
or convince you
of their expiration.

Decide whether you
want help to remember
or help to forget and
I will be there with
arms open in either case,
hoping that your grief
will outlast your guilt.

They have different timetables
and one is no friend to you
but the other will always
be there and maybe one day
it will help to remind you
of what is most important.
