Average Expectations

I have always
presented myself
as average.

Average looks.
Average grades.
Average life.

To me
it wasn’t
an undercut

just a realistic
of the void I fill
in the world

Sometimes people
get kind of angry,
did you know?

Like you’re just trying
to be realistic and they
think you’re being lazy

and now

I realize something
that I hadn’t before:
It was training.

All that mediocrity
I saw in myself
was a vaccine

against the
one needs
to hold tight to
in order
to survive
in this world.
