Wild Turkey

Sometimes you find yourself
on an unfamiliar road
at an ungodly hour
of the morning and
you’re sure the next curve
is going to be the one
to do you in until
you crest a hill
deep in the woods
and see beams of
sunlight streaming in
through the leaves
and you think
what do I care
about who is looking
for me at this moment
and what does it matter
what I’ve left behind.

Because sometimes you
find yourself on an
unfamiliar road at
an ungodly hour
of the morning
and you can’t help
but be grateful for
your smallness
in a world that is
demonstrating, loudly,
and in a way more
beautiful than you feel
the right to witness,
how much you
still don’t know.
