Bills Bills Bills

I loved her
and she left me
so when I chanced upon her
at the diner
we’d spent every night in
for close to a year,
I opened my wallet and
literally threw some bills
onto the table
as if to say, here –
i’ve paid the price
for us and i’m settling up
once and for all
– and now every time
you and I share a meal
we’re poised to pounce on the waitress
when she brings the check because
the only fights you and I ever have
are over which one of us
will pay the bill,
because we paid
the price already
so we know the cost
of this love and
more importantly
what is is worth.
